Quick start

Every screen in Kinetic Melbourne OCC — the tool built for Kinetic Melbourne's Operational Control Centre — in the fewest words. Ten minutes end to end.

This page says what to press and what happens. It does not say why, and it leaves the caveats out. The five that are dangerous to leave out are at the foot, one line each, each linked to the page that explains it. Everything else here has a longer, more careful version in the full tutorial.

The top bar

Always on screen, on all four tabs.

Banners stack under the bar, most serious first. Dismiss one with its ×.

Map Explorer

The tab the app opens on. Sidebar left, map middle, map tools bottom right, panel dock right.

Find a route

1. Sidebar → Routes.
2. Type in Filter routes by number or name… — the number or the name works.
3. Narrow by Operator if you want; All and Clear are in it.
4. Click a row. Click it again to clear it.

Selecting a route draws its line and its stops, frames the camera on it, narrows the live buses to it, and opens the Route panel.

In the Route panel: Both · Outbound · Inbound for direction; All patterns · Main pattern · Variant 1… for which pattern is drawn; Live buses listing what is out on it; and links to the same route in the other tabs — Timetable, Operations, Diversions, Plan diversion.

Find a stop

Sidebar → Stops → Search stops by name or code…, two characters minimum. Or click any stop dot on the map.

The Stop panel is a departure board. Today's opens on a NOW line; ↑ Earlier departures and ↓ Later departures show ten more each. Press a route badge to narrow the board to that route. Change the day with Departures on.

Each row: the wait, the booked time, the route badge, the destination, and — on a live row — a coloured chip saying how it is running.

Find one bus

Type at least two characters of a fleet number or a plate into the Routes filter box. Live buses matching it appear above the routes. Click one for the Bus panel.

Hover any bus dot for a small box. Click it for the panel, which has Technical details at the foot.

The map tools, bottom right

Radio, Layers, +, −, and Reset to Melbourne.

Layers and basemap

Layers opens three groups.

The button at the foot of the panel makes what you have switched on the way the map opens next time.

The four overlays

Switch one on in Layers; its key and its controls appear in the bar along the bottom of the map.

Hover anything an overlay draws for its own numbers.

Traffic radio

Radio, above Layers, where this deployment has a station.

• The panel is the list: play a bulletin, Mark heard, Mark unheard, Mark all heard, Load 25 more.
• The transport, first block in the bar at the bottom of the map: ▶ ❚❚ ⏮, −5, +5, speed, the position slider, volume, and ✕ to stop and close.
• The number on the Radio button counts bulletins that are unheard and under twelve hours old.

Save what you set up

Timetable

Pick one route on the left, then look at it six ways.

In Schedule, the bar along the bottom is the playback: Date, ▶ Play, Speed (1× to 240×, or Auto), traffic easing, the clock, and the Window slider. Drag a Window handle to narrow the window, the track to scrub. The window scopes every view.

In ● Live the same bar is a status line: live buses on this route, and the time the feed was generated.

Operations Analysis

Needs a roster loaded on the server, and an account with the ops role. Seven sections along the top.

Click any row in Shifts (drivers), Runs (buses) or Handoffs for a drawer with that whole day in it; Escape closes it. ⤓ Export CSV above every table exports the table as you are looking at it — your filters, your sort. Set the depot you open on in ⚙ Settings → Operations → My depot.

Diversions

The register is the list; the workspace is where one is drawn.

Find one: the All · Draft · Approved · Active · Retired chips, the search box, and the Operator filter. Click a row to open it in the detail pane.

Draw one:

1. New diversion, or the N key. (Row shortcuts: Plan and Edit on a draft, Dup for the opposite direction, Doc for the issued document.)
2. Fill Title, Reason, Route, Direction, Description, then Create draft.
3. Anchors → Place on Leave, click the map. Place on Rejoin, click the map. Each click snaps onto the route line.
4. Nudge a selected anchor with ← →: 5 m, or 25 m with Shift.
5. To send the bus another way, pull the green path sideways onto the street it should take, or press Add a via point and click. Up to eight.
6. Undo and Redo — Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Shift+Z — cover anchors, vias and anything you drew.
7. Driver instructions, on the right: generate the turns, edit the steps, add markers.

Move it along: Move to Approved → Move to Active → Move to Retired. There is no jump from Draft to Active. Approval freezes the plan; Move to Draft to edit again. Retiring asks for a reason.

Get the paper out: under Documents on the record — Preview, PDF (this is the one a driver is handed), JSON (canonical). Whole-register downloads are under Export. Reporting gives service-km lost by route and month. Bulletin layout sets how this depot's bulletins print. No-go areas holds roads a bus may never be routed through.

Settings

⚙ Settings, top bar. Every change takes effect at once; Escape closes.

Search settings… searches every section at once. Reset beside a setting, and Reset everything at the foot, delete your choice and hand the setting back to this deployment's own default.

A section you cannot see is a section this deployment has nothing in.

Full version: When something looks wrong.

Five things not to misread

Short because they are the whole of what this page leaves out, and each one has changed somebody's decision.

1. A grey bus dot is no prediction, not on time. Nobody has said how that bus is running. A screen full of grey means the predictions have stopped, not that the fleet is fine — No prediction is not the same as on time.
2. A figure with a leading ~ is an estimate and is not contractual. Every kilometre, drive time and service-km figure in Diversions is one — Every diversion figure is an estimate.
3. Nothing in Operations Analysis is live or observed. It is the roster as planned, with no date and no this-morning in it — What this tab needs before it works.
4. A time carrying +1 belongs to the previous day's service. The service day runs past midnight and turns over at about 03:00 — The +1 clock.
5. Some published route shapes are physically impossible, and the app draws a dash rather than a distance it does not trust — What the timetable does not know about the road.
